What is National Council? The Kappa Phi
National Council of Chapters meets every two years. A council is like a
convention or a conference where members of active and alumnae chapters, as well
as Life Members and Members-at-Large, come together to exchange ideas, plan for
the future of Kappa Phi, and enjoy the fellowship of sisters from across the
country.
What kind of activities takes place at
Council? A variety of events happen during Council including:
Programming is usually centered on the National Program theme for the coming
year and can be presented by guest speakers, study sessions, group events, etc.
Workshops are held covering a number of topics for both actives and alumnae
alike.
Business meetings for handing affairs of the organization and for election
of National Officers are held.
A fun night is a hi-light of the week when all join in on games, skits and
singing.
A special service of recognition for our Legion of Light honorees is
held.
Morning worship and vespers are observed in a variety of ways.
Installation of officers and a banquet typically closes the
week.
When is Council? The 2009 National Council of
Chapters will be held June 26 – July 2, 2009.
Where will Council be held? The 2009 National
Council of Chapters will be held at University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.
How much does Council cost? Registration Fee
for the 2009 National Council of Chapters is $340 per person.
Is financial assistance available? Financial
assistance is available. The financial assistance form is available here.
Actives should return their form by May 1 to Melissa Hodek,
National Treasurer.
Alumnae should return their form by May 1 to Penni Winslow,
National Alumnae Secretary.
What do I need to bring to Council with me?
Towels, pillow and linens will be provided, but you’ll want to bring:

Chapter items to sell in bookstore
Blanket for your bed
Soap/Toiletries
Bible & Kappa Phi songbook (if available)
$10 for Kappa Phi Council picture (if desired)
Misc spending money
Clothing
Outfit appropriate for a service project
Closed toed shoes (i.e. tennis shoes, hiking boots, work boots) for service
project
Formal/ Cruise wear for Banquet Wednesday Night
Church Attire for 2 ceremonies: Sunday & Monday
A collection of toys that are easily disinfected will be donated
to a local childrens hospital. If you would like to donate, please bring an item

I’m planning on flying to Council, which airport should I
use? Attendees flying to the 2009 National Council of Chapters
should make arrangements to fly into Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport.
Will transportation be available from the airport to
University of Dallas? Yes, transportation will be provided from the
Dallas/Ft Worth airport to University of Dallas. If transportation is needed
from the airport to the university, please indicate your request on your
registration form.
What committee/work group am I assigned
to? Each attendee will be assigned to a committee/workshop upon
registering. The chair of your group prior to Council beginning will contact
you.
What does my committee/work group do?
National Program: Works to develop and implement the
National Theme with emphasis on programming for Council and Kora.
Nominating: Works to identify and interview candidates for
national office to be elected at Council.
Strategic Plan: Reviews the strategic plan and recommend
future action, direction and evaluation.
Leadership: Works to provide leadership training for new
chapters, active chapters and advisors.
Finance: Reviews the financial status of Kappa Phi and
makes recommendations to Council regarding dues and all financial matters.
Ritual: Reviews the Ritual and Traditions and makes
recommendations for revisions and/or additions.
Constitution: Reviews the Kappa Phi Constitution and
presents proposed changes to the Council for action.
Legion of Light: Screens candidates for recognition in the
Legion of Light.
Technology: Reviews and makes suggestions for
Kappaphi.org
Marshal: Works with the Council Marshal to facilitate
Council activities.
Secretarial: Aids with the typing and other secretarial
needs.
Newsletter: Publishes a daily newsletter at Council.
Candle Beam: Reviews and makes suggestions about
the Candle Beam to the National Editor
Pledge: Reviews and makes suggestions about the training of
new members.
Alumnae Tithe: Makes recommendations to the Alumnae for the
distribution of the Tithe.
National Service Project: Determines the specific focus for
service for the next two years.
Courtesy/Sunshine: Acknowledges special happenings at
Council.Extension: Work with the National Executive Board in
establishing and developing chapters
